do’s and don’ts for wearing the neon trend

If you’ve been paying attention to what’s in for the upcoming spring season, you might already know that neon is going to be HUGE. I think it’s going to be one of those trends where you either love it or you really hate it– personally it’s growing on me. I bought a couple versatile neon yellow/green pieces like this turtleneck tank from Zara (which also comes in a gorgeous neon purple that I love) and my newly beloved Carhartt beanie, and they’ve honestly been a lot of fun to style.

However, after looking at some neon outfit inspiration on Pinterest, I can see why the neon trend is a tough one to pull off– even some fashion bloggers make questionable choices with their neon looks. In this post I’ll go through my personal do’s and don’ts for making the neon trend work.

Disclaimer: I am a strong believer that you can wear literally anything you want to wear. I am not saying that any of these bloggers have poor style at ALL. This is just my personal advice on what I find the best ways to style the neon trend and how to make it more wearable. Always go ahead and rock your clothes whatever way you like! ♥

  • DO: try a neon turtleneck

I’ve noticed that by far the most common way to wear neon is in turtleneck form. I think this is the perfect piece to buy if you want to try out the trend. It’s very easy to pair a fitted, colorful top like this with an otherwise plain outfit to jazz it up a bit.

  • DON’T: wear too many neon pieces at once

I do think there is a little too much neon sometimes. Neon colors are hard to match and if they don’t all go together perfectly, it can be a little mismatched. If you want to wear more than one neon piece at once, I would try ones that either match absolutely perfectly, or ones made to go together in a set.

  • DO: pair it with a blazer

I absolutely love the look of pairing neon with a blazer (you can see from my own photo I’ve done it too). The blazer helps to cover a lot of the neon so it functions only as an accent rather than overwhelming the whole outfit. I also think the more structured, businessy style of a blazer helps offset how casual neon can look sometimes.

  • DON’T: do this whole motocross thing

I saw this concept several times in my neon research, and frankly I just think it is too much. If you’re going to do the whole motocross pants look, doing so with more wearable colors can work, but I think that adding in neon just makes it way too literal. If you can pull this look off, power to you, but most of us can’t step out in public in something like this.

  • DO: pair it with all black

I think the most fool-proof way to wear neon is to pair it with everything black in the rest of the outfit. This helps balance out the bright color and makes the outfit look very modern and clean. Once again, both these looks show a blazer paired with the neon which I think makes it look much more sophisticated. Also, I think those neon pants are fab and I would totally wear them.

  • DON’T: neon sportswear and bike shorts

Okay, bike shorts are hard enough to wear in the first place, so why make it harder for yourself and make them neon too? Although this girl’s bod looks great and she could probably pull off a plastic bag, I just think the neon bike shorts are too much, especially paired with the fanny pack and sports bra. Going too sporty with neon will make it look like you’re getting dressed for softball practice in middle school instead of going out for lunch.

  • DO: pair it with denim

I actually think that neon pairs really well with light wash denim (and black denim top of course). This is a good way to make your neon look casual but not too sporty. A relaxed neon t-shirt and some vintage high waisted jeans is the way to go, just keep the rest of your look simple and clean to make sure you still look put together.

  • DON’T: do neon & checkers

Okay, this outfit just pulls in all of my neon outfit pet-peeves like the biker shorts and mismatched colors. I kind of thought checkers were going out of style, but I do see them in a ton of different variations in the new f/w 2019 shows. So, if you decide to keep rocking checkers I would advise you to do so cautiously when pairing it with neon. In my opinion this look is a little too cheesy and brings in too many racecar/skater/street sign references to be taken seriously. Also, my theme here might just be that I really can’t get behind biker shorts.

  • DO: make the neon subtle

I think that both of these looks do a very great job of subtly integrating neon into their outfits in very different ways. In the look on the left, I love how neon pairs under grey and the little peep of green socks above her booties that ties it all together. In the look on the right, I love how she made a bold statement by pairing the cheetah jacket with the neon top, but it works because the colors in the jacket are neutral and the rest of her outfit is quite basic. Both looks exemplify how neon should be an accent to your look, but not overpower it.

So… what do you think of the neon trend? Will you try out some of my tips on how to rock it or have I just officially scared you away? Let me know in the comments below or on my Instagram!

NYFW trends – faux fur & leather look

img_0716.jpg
All Photo Credits to Chloe Aviza

Watching, admiring, and studying all of the amazing fashion shows and even the street style at NYFW has had me feeling extremely inspired the past couple of weeks. Even though the shows are supposed to be for fall, luckily (well, I guess?) it’s still cold enough in upstate NY for me in to wear what I saw on the runway right now. One of my favorite shows I saw was Sally LaPointe’s Fall 2019 RTW. Her luxurious silky jumpsuits and scarves, head-to-toe leather, snakeskin, sequins, and fur accents just had me in an absolute dream! Also, you know all I am REVELING in the fact that the cabbie/newsboy hats will clearly still be in for next year, so my obsession will be able to continue on through 2019.

img_0724.jpg

I pulled together today’s outfit after finding this gorgeous vintage chocolate brown faux fur bomber jacket at my local thrift shop. If you saw my Instagram story the other day, you know I saw it there and actually left the store without buying it, but then I was panicking as soon as I left the parking lot that someone else would take it so I had to go back for it right away (typical Emma things). I don’t regret going back for it at all, it’s just an absolutely gorgeous piece and it’s so so warm and cozy! I especially love the knit details on it and its oversized look which makes it a little more casual.

img_0719.jpg

While this outfit was heavily inspired by the Sally Lapointe show with the head-to-toe leather and turtleneck look, I also pulled in some other accents that I think will also be super trendy in 2019. Yes, I think belt bags will keep on rockin’ through the year, which I noticed in both the Zimmerman Fall RTW and Fendi Spring RTW 2019 shows. I’ve also been seeing lots of 2000’s inspiration especially in street style lately, such as the layered clips I’m wearing in my hair.

img_0715.jpg

It was so much fun to get together with the fabulous Chloe Aviza (here’s her Instagram and Website) and shoot these outfit photos, she did such an amazing job and I’m in love with how they turned out! Scroll down to see the rest of the shots and my outfit details.

bella hadid street style inspired lookbook

40e4f2c7-f88d-4802-8610-b0b127ec1bc2.jpg

Recently I was scrolling on Pinterest and went into a deep dark hole of pinning every single one of Bella Hadid’s outfits to my “outfit inspo” board. I never really noticed her fashion before, but I quickly realized that she has super similar style to me and we own a lot of the same type of pieces (well hers are designer versions of course, but close enough). Since Bella lives in NYC, her street style is absolutely amazing and many of her looks are actually super wearable for colder weather days in college. I decided to put together some of my favorites of her street style looks and recreate them for myself! I ended up being able to use pretty much all items I already owned (I put where they’re all from but didn’t link because many are older styles), so the outfits aren’t perfect copies but definitely inspired by her looks!

All photos of me were taken by my friend Sid Chaturvedi- @thesiddhantc on Instagram and www.thesiddhantc.com. He’s amazing so please go check out his work!

  • Look #1: Menswear + Grunge

This look was surprisingly easy to recreate because I literally owned all of the perfect pieces for it already! I can vouch that this outfit is super wearable because I actually wore it to class the other day (I just unbuttoned the shirt for a more laid-back look).

Outfit #1 Details:

white button up shirt: stole from my dad (lol) would be easy to thrift though!
grey plaid pants: H&M
combat boots: H&M
belt bag: Target
lil sunglasses: Target

  • Look #2: Bella in all Black

I loved how cool and edgy this look is while still being comfortable and warm. Once again, I can vouch that this outfit is super wearable because I actually wore it to class too! I wish I had been able to add the safety pins to my sweatshirt, but I didn’t have any on hand. If you want to recreate her shirt though, it would be so so simple to just put some safety pins onto a cropped hoodie, no need to buy a fancy custom one online!

Outfit #2 Details:

turtleneck: American Eagle
cropped hoodie: DIY crop job on a Walmart hoodie
jeans: thrifted oversized Levi’s (I saw a ton of cargo pants like hers at Forever 21 the other day though!)
belt: Marshall’s
boots: H&M again – would have been fun to replace the laces with red ones like hers!
purse: Target
gold hoops: Fancy Schmancy (where I work, they’re all over though)

  • Look #3: Neutral in NYC

Okay, I’m pretty proud of how spot on this look is. It’s kind of scary how I already owned all of these pieces that were exactly like hers (many of them were thrifted too)! I also have worn this look to class before, but I would probably switch out the heels with my white Air Force 1s so it’s easier to walk around in.

outfit #3 details:

white turtleneck: thrifted & DIY cropped
jacket: thrifted brown corduroy & shearling collar Timberland, DIY crop (this was a great thrift find but I’m glad I cropped it to give it more shape and a more modern look. I need to sew the hem though so that the lining matches up with the outside!)
pants: thrifted & DIY cropped (I pulled out the thread at the bottom to make them more shredded looking)
sock boots: DSW
fuzzy scrunchie: Free People
purse (Target), belt (marshall’s), and sunglasses (Target) are same from past looks

  • Look #4: Crop Tops + Coffee

Okay I’m sorry I included the coffee mug as an accessory but I had to because I think I’m hilarious. Also I really wouldn’t hold it against myself to carry a coffee mug to class at this point. I’m missing a mans by my side and Bella’s killer abs but we can’t have it all can we?

Outfit #4 Details:

black turtleneck: same one from American Eagle – to give it the cropped effect I fold it up underneath and actually tuck it into my bra so it stays. I do this all the time and it works perfectly so I don’t have to cut my shirts!
track pants: Adidas (although I’ve been seeing Bella’s warmup style pants everywhere like Forever 21, and I’m sure you could easily thrift some too)
sneakers: Air Force 1’s
puffer coat: Columbia (I like how this look made it possible to make a black puffer look less basic and more fashionable!)
small silver hoops: Fancy Schmancy
sunglasses: Target (these really are a Bella staple)
coffee mug: lol JK

  • Look #5: Cardi w some Cheetah

First of all, I just love how these photos Sid took of me turned out! The lighting, outfit, and location pulled together so nicely. I’m far from a street setting on my campus, but I still think street style is so easy to wear when walking from class to class! With this outfit I used a slightly different, longer cardigan but I really like how it looks in both outfits! It was a good way to wear a cardigan that I don’t normally use in a different way.

Outfit #5 Details:

cardigan: Forever 21 (although a cardigan like Bella’s would be so so easy to thrift)
jeans: thrifted & DIY cropped
belt: Target – I just bought this for this look but I love the thing to death already, having a printed belt is a great way to add a pop to any outfit!
combat boots (H&M), sunglasses (Target), and hoops (Fancy) are same from past looks!

I hope you guys loved this lookbook as much as I loved putting it together. I’m really proud of how this came out and this is really the quality of content I would love to keep making for this blog! If you’d like to keep seeing more lookbooks/celebrity inspired fashion like this, please let me know and I’ll keep making it! Also, if you had a favorite outfit, comment it below or on my Instagram because I’d love to know!❤️

a pop of red – fall lookbook

HI EVERYONE!!! Here I finally am with a new blog post for you. Summer was a whirlwind of fun (and work), but it went by way too fast and I never got myself out to take photos for a blog post… for some reason being back at school makes me more inspired to wear cute outfits and put together lookbooks to take pictures of. Or maybe that’s just because I’m actually forced to get dressed and look presentable to see my fellow student population every day– well, most days… even I’m guilty of looking homeless sometimes.
It’s actually so crazy to look at my last blog post (that was in February? Embarrassing…) and think about how much I’ve changed even since then. My life is totally different, my fashion sense, everything. I like to think I’m even a better writer now (hopefully that English degree is paying off). I love to see myself growing as a person and hopefully you people who have read my blog since the beginning– that was a year ago by the way– love seeing it too!

30624d3d-d52c-4935-97f1-4c386b45d408.jpg

I’ve noticed that I’ve gotten a LOT more daring with my fashion recently, which definitely results in some stares when you go to a college where practically everyone wears athletic clothes all the time. Lately, I’ve been super into an obnoxious shade of red, which I’ve learned will definitely get you some head-turns in the dining hall. Everything I’ve been buying is this bright red color, like my new Michael Kors wallet I got for my birthday and the pants I wore in this post. I went out to my favorite photoshoot location (River Street in Troy) and put together a couple fun, street-style outfits for you to show you how I integrate pops of red into everyday outfits. I can’t wait to get back to doing more shoots and even more artistic concepts for my upcoming blog posts… I have a whole list of ideas already!

The amazing culotte pants that I’m wearing for this outfit are from Copper Fox Boutique (@copperfoxshop_troy on Instagram) in Troy. Since they had a half off rack last week, I got them for a great deal for only $25. Copper Fox has been one of my all-time favorite shops since it opened about a year ago, with super adorable unique clothing and a fun bohemian vibe. It’s one of my favorite best-kept Troy secrets. These pants are also super comfy with a lightweight material and elastic waistband, I couldn’t pass them up.

3aebab84-1c57-4b27-83c0-863726d2be49.jpg

My top is a super simple striped crop top from Forever 21 that I’ve had for a couple of years, but I’m sure there’s tons of similar ones all over the place. When you’re wearing a statement piece like these pants, it’s best to keep everything else super simple and neutral. I like pairing black & white with red the best, and the pattern on the top really helps to break everything up with the huge solid block of red in the pants. If I’m wearing flowy pants like this, I always like to wear a tight, short shirt on top to balance it out so I don’t look too frumpy.

For my shoes, I also got these for a great deal (like 10 bucks, literally) on the clearance rack at Target this summer. They match the pants so perfectly I couldn’t help but wear them together. I’ve been super into the espadrille style all summer, so I wanted to put them to good use before it gets too cold out! They’re all sold out now, but these wedges from Target are very similar if you want the same kind of look.

By the way, if you’ve never been to the River Street Beat Shop, I highly recommend. 10/10 super cool record shop and photo shoot location.

My next outfit is something I actually wore to class the other day and just threw back on again to put into this lookbook. I’ve been loving a more streetwear-inspired look lately, and this outfit definitely shows that. I mixed together some more casual and edgy aspects to achieve the perfect balance. The faux leather jacket I’m wearing is a must-have from Forever 21, I got it about a year ago but they definitely still have tons of similar, well-priced ones there right now.

bae075e6-e057-46d7-b929-bdf3e02b6746.jpg5a6c154f-bfb0-44e7-beab-8358e1dc60b2.jpg 0f6a4afd-b9f1-4d57-93bb-a9e01a2ddd2a.jpg

My super comfy black harem pants from H&M are one of my new favorite wardrobe staples, another great deal I got for only $17.99 (it looks like they’re sold out online, but they definitely still have them at my local store in Crossgates). I kept the comfy look going with my favorite pair of black high-top Vans — mine are the Slim style because I like the lower profile. I highly recommend investing in either a pair of black Vans or Converse (I have both) since I wear mine to death.

077deca5-aef9-4359-b894-c47c7d32a13f.jpg

My pop of red comes from my tube top, which I actually DIY’d by cutting the top off of a red spaghetti-strap tank top from the kid’s section of Walmart. I mean, you’d never know right…? Works for me.
I pulled the red together even more with my red lips and topped it off with my favorite pair of silver hoop earrings (I’m telling you, hoops are back in action). When I’m wearing a busy outfit like this one, I always like to throw my hair into a top knot bun to keep it out of the way. Plus, it works really well when I hopped out of shower 10 minutes before class so I don’t have to use a hairdryer.

daadff1e-60cb-4431-b03f-034d13bebe94.jpg

My last outfit features some of my favorite vintage clothes that I got at the Troy Flea Market (I swear I don’t get everything I own in Troy, I don’t know what’s wrong with me). I got these amazing vintage Levi jeans from La Relance Clothing (@la_relance on Instagram). They fit me like they were made for me and my friends make fun of me for wearing them too much. My scarf is vintage 13 Rue Cambon Paris Chanel, which is one of my most prized possessions.

3974e907-f876-4df0-9ca2-79b29700fd5a.jpgee17f51d-9530-4c6e-8cf0-359ae7730d15.jpg d7a4de0a-a0e2-4a6b-b641-469bebe608d4.jpg

Since my shoes and the scarf coordinated together perfectly in bright red obnoxious harmony, I made sure once again to keep the rest of my outfit super neutral with the plain jeans, a simple black belt, and a white tank top from Forever 21.

If you know anything about me, you know I’m obsessed with acai bowls, specifically Liza’s (@lizasoftroy on Instagram). I would be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t frequent there at least once a week.

4eb47d53-b9c9-48f7-9d5d-4e9f61b77480.jpg

If you know me you also know I’m obsessed with Psychedellicatessen. I just got a tie-dye shirt there last week and I’m super excited about it.

Thank you to everyone who made it all the way through this lookbook and read all of my fun commentary. If you liked this post, please let me know and give me some luv! I’m so happy to be getting back to blogging again and I can’t wait for what I have in store.

rompers? for winter? groundbreaking.

ppetmpdupHi everyone! I’m really excited to finally be getting back into posting fashion on my blog. For today, I just decided to do a short and sweet OOTD post. Coming up soon, I’d love to try to put together a lookbook to share even more fashion inspiration and ideas with you all!ppetmpdupProbably a lot of people think I’m crazy for wearing a romper in freezing cold upstate NY weather. But I’m usually just as warm (and a lot more comfortable) wearing a romper or skirt or dress with tights than if I were wearing pants. So, most of the time I opt against the pants. Obviously, I would normally be wearing my thick puffer parka anytime I’m outside (plus sometimes a hat and gloves), but for the purposes of the photos, I took that off.

ppetmpdup6174567936_IMG_1613

Today, I was just in the mood to wear a romper. When I woke up, I was wishing that the sun would come out all the snow would melt and finally it would be spring, but unfortunately I don’t think that’s in my immediate future here in upstate NY. I went for the romper anyways, because who says you can’t wear rompers in winter?

ppetmpdup

Here’s my best advice for how to pull off a romper/skirt/dress even in the coldest of weather:

1) LAYERS!
It may be obvious, but if you want to stay warm, layering is key. I actually ended up wearing a long-sleeved off the shoulder bodysuit under my romper. It’s a huge trend right now to layer even a basic tee or turtleneck underneath a tank top or anything with spaghetti straps, so try to get creative with it. I’m always trying out layering things that you normally wouldn’t think to put together, and sometimes the results are really nice.
2) Tights/Leggings
To keep your legs warm, tights and leggings underneath whatever you’re wearing is ideal. I just have like 5 pairs of black tights that I wear all the time, but you can get funky with this too. Sometimes I will wear fishnets, and there are all kinds of funky colored and designed (like lace) tights that you can try out too.
3) Jackets/Cardigans
Another obvious way to stay warm is to throw a jacket or cardigan over your dress. I could easily have paired this outfit with a nice leather jacket or chunky sweater for warmth. There are tons of options for jackets/coats/sweaters etc that you can layer on top of any outfit. Like I said, I almost always wear my parka puffer jacket when I’m walking around campus. It may not be the cutest thing, but it’s super practical and I take it off as soon as I get indoors anyways.
4) Warm Accessories
I’m super into using accessories that are practical and cute. My go-to is over the knee socks like the ones I’m wearing in this outfit. I have tons of them in different colors and textures, and they just add the perfect extra touch to an outfit. I also love popping on a hat/beanie, scarf, or bandanna around my neck for something extra, and they keep you warm too.
5) Boots
Especially in the weather lately (if you didn’t know, NY has been hit with some nasty snow storms in the past couple weeks), boots are a must. I practically always wear my Hunter boots when it’s snowing because they keep me warm, and allow me to trudge through the snow even when it’s piled up to my knees. If it’s not snowing, I’ll wear either riding boots or suede over the knee boots, and if it’s a little warmer, I’ll even throw on some booties or Converse hi-tops too.

ppetmpdupBoots: Hunter rain boots
Over the Knee Socks: Forever 21
ppetmpdupRomper: Target (I think, its super old though)
Bodysuit: Forever 21

ppetmpdupppetmpdup

I wanted to throw in the close- up pictures of the brick wall because I think it looks so cool. This wall is right outside my dorm building, so of course whenever I walk by it the blogger nerd in me always thinks about how I really want to take an OOTD in front of this cool ugly wall. So I did.

Hope you guys liked today’s OOTD! If you really like these types of posts, please let me know and I’ll do more!
s/o to my roommate Allie for standing in the cold to take pictures of my outfit!!

yellow love

emma-1 Hello everyone! I’m so excited to finally be getting up my first blog post. This blog has been long awaited, well by me at least. I will be posting about all types of things other than fashion too, like art and lifestyle posts, but if anyone knows me they know a fashion post is only appropriate to start things off.

I wanted to make it short and sweet today, so here’s just a few pictures I had my friend Ariel take of me for a first OOTD. I was walking through my campus and was so inspired by the bright yellow trees here, so I just had to get some pictures by them today in the beautiful autumn weather.
